What is parvovirus in dogs and puppies?
Canine Parvovirus type 2 or CPV2 and also known as Parvo is a highly contagious virus mainly affecting dogs. CPV2 is spread from dog to dog by direct or indirect contact with infected feces, or infected soil. Dogs that develope the disease show symptoms of the illness within 3 to 10 days and can continue to shed the virus for up to 6 weeks after they recover.
Dogs can die within 48 - 72 hours without aggressive treatment with fluids and antibiotics. Dogs who come down with parvovirus usually die from the dehydration it causes or secondary infections rather than the virus itself.
